Socialist youth group to protest Trump during Davos forum

A socialist youth group in Switzerland is preparing to protest President Trump and other figures during the World Economic forum in Davos later this month, after authorization from local officials.

Officials in Davos approved Switzerland’s Young Socialists’ request to hold a demonstration near City Hall on Jan. 24, according to The Associated Press

The news service noted that the protest is meant to show opposition toward Trump, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and other wealthy elites that will gather at the annual forum, which is scheduled to take place between Jan. 22 and Jan. 25.

Julia Baumgartner, secretary-general of the group, told the AP that the Young Socialists was “very excited” about the opportunity to hold a demonstration. She added that she expected about 150 to 200 people to participate in it.

Officials said the authorization for this protest could be reviewed if weather conditions or the security situation changes. A similar request from the Young Socialists was rejected in 2018 due to heavy snowfall.

Trump told reporters on Thursday that he would skip the World Economic Forum if the partial government shutdown continues until Jan. 21, when he is set to depart. He said that the trip was “still on” for now.

The government shutdown, which began on Dec. 22 after Republicans and Democrats could not come to an agreement on a new spending bill. Trump has demanded that funds for a long-promised border wall be included in it, which Democrats oppose.

Trump became the first president since former President Clinton to travel to the gathering in the Swiss Alps in 2018.
