Coulter rips Trump, GOP for backing funding deal

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter on Thursday slammed the news that President Trump will sign off on a border security deal brokered by Congress, calling it “selling out” GOP constituents.

“GOP motto: NEXT TIME! We’re selling out our constituents this time — but we’ll get to our promises NEXT TIME. We thought Trump was different,” Coulter tweeted in response to an announcement from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that Trump would sign the legislation and declare a national emergency at the border.

McConnell’s comments ended speculation over whether Trump would agree to sign the funding deal, which includes $1.375 billion in funding for roughly 55 miles of new barriers along the southern border.

The president has for weeks raised the prospect of declaring a national emergency to direct construction of his long-desired border wall. The move is sure to draw legal challenges. Republicans have been reluctant to support an emergency declaration, noting it could set a dangerous precedent for future presidents.

Coulter, who backed Trump in the 2016 election but has been critical of the president over his inability to secure funding for a wall along the southern border, is among the conservatives with hard-line immigration views who have panned the deal reached by Congress.

A number of other conservative commentators have been critical of the agreement, including Fox News host Laura Ingraham, who urged Trump not to sign it.
