The Bureau of Prisons is investigating Martin Shkreli for allegedly using his cellphone to run his pharmaceutical company from prison, according to The Washington Post.
The investigation comes after The Wall Street Journal reported that Shkreli used a contraband phone to help steer his company, Phoenixus, while serving his sentence.
{mosads}”When there are allegations of misconduct, they are thoroughly investigated, and appropriate action is taken if such allegations are proven true,” the bureau said in a statement to the Post. “This allegation is currently under investigation.”
The bureau did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment. It told the Post that prisoners who use cellphones could face a year in prison and a fine.
Shkreli was convicted in 2017 of two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiring to commit securities fraud. He’s serving a seven-year sentence.
He attracted strong criticism after he raised the price of a drug used to treat HIV by 5,000 percent.
