A Kansas woman has been sentenced to a year of probation for stealing thousands of dollars in donations meant for an 11-year-old burn victim.
A judge also ordered Cinthia Davis, 34, to pay the remaining money owed back to the child’s family.
{mosads}Davis was convicted of felony theft earlier this year, according to Wichita’s ABC-affiliate KAKE, for setting up a GoFundMe account to raise money for an 11-year-old girl who suffered second- and third-degree burns after her dress caught fire while playing with a friend who had a lighter.
The fundraiser pulled in more than $8,000 in less than a month, but investigators found that the funds were withdrawn and spent over a 60-day period. Davis’s husband pleaded guilty to the theft and was also sentenced to probation last year.
The family of the burn victim only received a few hundred dollars of the funds raised, according to the report.
