Auschwitz tells people to stop taking photos on train tracks

The Auschwitz Memorial and Museum in Poland is telling visitors to stop taking photos on the train tracks at the site of the former Nazi death camp.

The museum posted the plea from its official Twitter account, urging visitors to “respect [the] memory” of the more than 1 million people who were killed there during the Holocaust. 

{mosads}“When you come to [Auschwitz Museum] remember you are at the site where over 1 million people were killed,” the museum wrote. “Respect their memory.”

“There are better places to learn how to walk on a balance beam than the site which symbolizes deportation of hundreds of thousands to their deaths.”

The museum shared four examples of such photos that it is asking people not to take.

Within hours of posting, more than 5,000 people had “liked” the tweet and more than 1,000 others had retweeted it.

Auschwitz visitors have for years been criticized as disrespectful for taking “selfies” and other photos at the memorial site.
