Nebraska woman was surrogate for gay son’s child

A 61-year-old woman in Nebraska recently gave birth to her own grandchild, serving as a surrogate for her son and his husband.

Cecile Eledge delivered Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge at the Nebraska Medical Center last week, according to media reports, serving as the surrogate for her son, Matthew Eledge, and his husband, Elliot Dougherty.

{mosads}According to NBC News, the family originally planned to find a different surrogate but weren’t comfortable trying to negotiate the process as gay men.

“Nebraska is a bit more conservative, and we were hesitant to go into agencies, and had a bit of fear that maybe some things would hold us back being a gay couple,” Matthew Eledge said.

Cecile Eledge said she “never hesitated” to become the surrogate.

“I was just so excited to be able to be part of this adventure with them. … It was just unconditional love,” she said.

Doctors cleared Cecile to be the surrogate following testing, according to CBS News.

Matthew Eledge told CBS News that “we are thankful with how the whole process worked.”

“We are really grateful that both Uma and her grandma are here, happy and healthy. For the time being, we’re just going to relax and enjoy this moment,” he added.
