Switzerland wants to stop stockpiling coffee, saying that it is “not essential” to human life.
The country began the practice of holding coffee reserves between World War I and II to preempt potential shortages.
{mosads}Now the government plans to end the practice by 2022.
“Coffee has almost no calories and subsequently does not contribute, from the physiological perspective, to safeguarding nutrition,” the Federal Office for National Economic Supply said.
Switzerland currently has 15,300 tons of coffee in reserves, which is enough to last the country roughly three months.
According to the International Coffee Organization, the average Swiss person consumes 20 pounds of coffee per year.
