Four-year-old victim of Christchurch mosque shooting wakes up from coma suffering from blindness, brain damage: report

A four-year-old girl shot multiple times during the terror attack that targeted two mosques in New Zealand last month has sustained brain damage and is unable to see, her parents said.

According to The New Zealand Herald, the young girl, Alen, has been recovering in a hospital in Auckland.

{mosads}Alen and her father, Wasseim Alsati, reportedly suffered multiple gunshot wounds at the Al Noor Mosque, one the mosques that was targeted in the massacre.

Alsati shared an update on his and his daughter’s recovery in a video shared to Facebook on Wednesday.

“My daughter Alen wake up five days ago and she’s had a lot of surgeries … seven to eight surgeries. She has brain damage at the moment and the doctor has told us they need four to six months to know how bad the damage is,” he said while speaking from his hospital bed.

“My daughter wake up and she doesn’t know us and she cannot see us and she cannot hear us at all. I don’t know if my daughter is cold or warm or if my daughter is replying back to me at all but we’re all waiting,” he continued.

Alsati urged viewers to continue praying for him and his daughter.

“We need that. And thank you for being beside us, guys. I cannot wait till we all feel better … I miss everybody.”

A page created for the family on Givealittle, a crowdfunding site for New Zealanders, has raised more than $24,000 for the pair as of Friday afternoon.

Funds raised will be used for ongoing nursing and medical care for Alen and for supporting the family, the page said.
