Calif. police department apologizes for tweet calling Tlaib ‘un-American’

A police department in California has apologized for a tweet that called Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) “un-American.”

The Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday that the since-deleted tweet from the Fontana Police Department was posted last week by an off-duty employee.

{mosads}”Nice knowing you! I became bulimic because I vomit every time I hear your BS. You are one of the most un-American person s I know. You are a disgrace to the office you hold,” the tweet read, according to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin in California.

The police department later posted a statement on Twitter apologizing and saying the previous tweet did not reflect the department’s values.

“This careless act does not reflect the values of the men and women that honorably serve our community,” the statement read.

The deleted tweet also included a post from a right-wing website about Tlaib’s efforts to “shut down” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Tlaib’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Fontana Police employee responsible for the tweet was not identified, and the department said it took away the person’s access to the department’s Twitter account. The department first attributed the incident to a hacker gaining access to its social media account, according to the Daily Bulletin.

Tlaib, one of the first two Muslim women elected to serve in Congress, has been the subject of several instances of hateful messages since joining the House as a freshman lawmaker in January.

The progressive Democrat shared a picture last month of a note left outside her congressional office that accused Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who is Muslim, of being anti-Semitic. Tlaib called the note an example of “hateful rhetoric & bullying.”
