‘Honor Flight’ on its way to Washington lands safely after being struck by lightning

A flight of U.S. military veterans headed to Washington, D.C., landed safely on Monday after being struck by lightning.

The Sun Country Airlines flight, part of the nonprofit Honor Flight Network’s efforts to send U.S. veterans to Washington to see national monuments and museums, landed safely at 9:27 a.m. Monday, according to USA Today.

{mosads}Veterans on board the aircraft were reportedly unaware of the trouble until after the plane landed and news reports began rolling in.

“The lighting strike wasn’t much of anything,” one passenger, Joshua Eaker, told the Peoria Journal Star. “We didn’t even know the plane was hit until we started hearing about it from the news story.”

Eaker, whose father-in-law is an Air Force veteran, said that the trip was memorable regardless of the incident.

“The changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery has been his favorite experience so far,” Eaker said of his father-in-law.

“This trip means everything to him. He had been waiting to go for a while now and just can’t believe the experiences he has had. The welcome at the airport when we arrived, as well as all of the people that have been walking up to thank him has brought tears to his eyes,” he added to the Journal Star.
