Transgender woman previously attacked in viral video found dead
A transgender woman, who was attacked in a video that went viral last month, was found dead in Dallas on Saturday, police say.
Muhlaysia Booker, 23, was fatally shot at least once, Maj. Vincent Weddington of the Dallas Police Department said at a news conference on Sunday.
Officers reportedly responded to the scene after reports of gunshots at about 6:40 a.m. Saturday. They found Booker in the street.
Booker garnered national attention in April after she was attacked outside an apartment complex following a minor traffic accident. Bystanders can be seen watching her get beaten, with some seeming to cheer in the background.
Police arrested 29-year-old Edward Thomas, who appears in the video, in the April incident. He has since been charged with aggravated assault but is no longer in jail, Weddington said.
Thomas was allegedly offered $200 by another man to attack Booker, police said last month. So far, police say there’s nothing that connects Thomas to the murder, CBS reports.
As of Monday morning, the murder had not been classified as a hate crime.
