Colorado governor pokes fun at FaceApp

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) poked fun at the popular aging filter photo app FaceApp, posting a photo of himself showing what he quipped “is what 6 months being Governor does to you.”

Polis joined in on the viral FaceApp challenge Wednesday, posting a picture of himself where he looks heavily aged.

The popular app has raised alarm among some legal experts who said the app prompted security concerns over broad language in its privacy policy. FaceApp’s policy says it “cannot ensure the security of any information you transmit to FaceApp or guarantee that information on the Service may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed” and says FaceApp can share user content with affiliated businesses. {mosads}

FaceApp CEO Yaroslav Goncharov told The Guardian that data is not transferred to Russia but instead stored on U.S.-controlled cloud computing services provided by Amazon and Google. 

Polis’s post came the same day the Democratic National Committee (DNC) urged 2020 candidates not to use the app due to fears surrounding the apps’ Russian roots.

“This app allows users to perform different transformations on photos of people, such as aging the person in the picture. Unfortunately, this novelty is not without risk: FaceApp was developed by Russians,” DNC chief security officer Bob Lord’s message to the campaigns read.
