Illinois gas station clerk fired after threatening Latino customers that ‘ICE will come’

An Illinois gas station employee was fired after threatening Latino customers by telling them that “ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] will come,” NBC News reports.

Video of the incident, which went viral on social media, shows the unnamed clerk arguing with two women from behind the counter at a Bucky’s Express shop in Naperville, Ill.

“I’m an American,” he says. “Are you a citizen?”

“Yes. What is your problem,” one woman responds.{mosads}

The employee replies: “Don’t you know the rules? They need to go back to their country. It’s illegal.”

One woman tells the man to “be quiet” and threatens to call the police, saying, “I hate you.”

The man appears to say “you’ll be sorry,” adding that “ICE will come.”

Stephen Kalhorn, general counsel of the company that owns several nearby Bucky’s Express shops, said the worker was fired Thursday after being suspended Wednesday.

“Clearly, there was an altercation, and he didn’t react well,” Kalhorn told NBC Chicago. “And we don’t treat customers that way, that’s why he’s no longer an employee.”

The Naperville Police Department has reviewed the video and is looking into the incident, Mayor Steve Chirico wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“Let me be abundantly clear: hate has no home here in Naperville,” he wrote. “Quite frankly, this type of behavior has no place in society at large.”
