A farm in Menomonie, Wis., designed a corn maze to raise awareness about suicide.
In a photo shared by the Govin’s Farm on Facebook, the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be seen carved into the farm’s corn maze.
{mosads}The message reads: “Your life matters 1-800-273-TALK About Suicide.”
In the Facebook post, the farm wrote that it has “always picked a theme that has meaning to our family and this year suicide was something we unfortunately had to face and learn about.”
“We hope to make a difference in someone’s life and help them understand that they matter!” it continued in the post.
John and Julie Govin told CNN in an interview released Friday that they got the idea to make suicide prevention the theme of this year’s corn maze design after the recent death of a loved one.
“The idea immediately popped into our heads. In fact, it was on the way to the funeral that the idea popped into our heads that maybe we could do a suicide prevention maze,” he told the news agency.
“We worried that it may drive people away from our farm instead of driving them to our farm,” Govin continued. He talked to other corn maze operators who thought it was a great idea.
“It’s been such a positive experience. We didn’t really know what to expect,” he said, adding that he and his wife are “really doing this in the hope that we can prevent another family from going through what we’ve gone through.”
According to CNN, the farm will be opening up the corn maze to visitors on Sept. 21.
