Police in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday identified the suspected gunman in a mass shooting that killed nine people.
Lt. Col. Matt Carper told reporters that the suspect was Connor Betts, a 24-year-old white male.
{mosads}Carper added the suspect’s sister, 22-year-old Meghan Betts, was among the victims early Sunday.
Six of the nine victims were African Americans, he added. However, law enforcement said they are not yet investigating a hate crime as a motivation for the shootings, according to CBS News. Betts has no previous police record, and was not on the radar of police before the shooting, according to authorities.
Carper said Sunday afternoon that Betts allegedly used an assault-style rifle with a capacity of 100 rounds and wore ballistic body armor during the shooting.
The gun used in the shooting was ordered online from Texas then transferred to the suspect at a local firerarms dealer.
Law enforcement authorities told CNN that a search warrant was served at the Betts family home in Bellbrook, Ohio.
Carper said that it remains too early to determine whether the shooter targeted specific people or places. He said all nine of the victims, who were between 22 and 57 years old, were found in the same location.
Police have identified the victims as Lois Ogelsby, Megan Betts, Siad Salah, Logan Turner, Nicholas Cummer, Thomas McNichols, Beatrice Warren Curtis, Monica Brickhouse and Derrick Fudge, according to local news outlet Dayton 24/7 Now.
Bellbrook City Manager Melissa Dodd told local news she is cooperating with local police to ensure Betts’ family receives whatever support they need.
