Woman wearing hijab among 1 dead, 1 injured in Pittsburgh stabbing

One woman was killed and another was wounded in a stabbing in downtown Pittsburgh on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

An officer was reportedly patrolling the area when he saw a woman sleeping in a bus shelter. He went back to check on her, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

At about 11:30 a.m., a man came up from behind a police officer while he was talking to the woman and stabbed her and a second woman at a Port Authority bus stop, the outlet reports police said.{mosads}

The officer immediately subdued the suspect, then started applying first aid to the first victim, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The first woman was taken to the hospital and later died, while the second woman — who was said to be wearing a hijab — sustained minor injuries, the Post-Gazette reports.

Police don’t think the attack was motivated by religion or ethnicity, according to the Post-Gazette.

“It seems, by all accounts, a random act of violence,” Commander Victor Joseph, head of the Violent Crimes Unit, told the Post-Gazette.

The man was taken to Pittsburgh Police headquarters for questioning, CBS Pittsburgh reports.
