Authorities won’t appeal verdict in A$AP Rocky case

A Swedish prosecutor reportedly said Tuesday that he will not appeal the verdict against American rapper A$AP Rocky, who was found guilty of assault earlier this month.

Prosecutor Daniel Suneson said that “after due consideration,” he wouldn’t challenge the verdict, which protects A$AP Rocky — who was not sentenced to any prison time — from a harsher penalty, CNN reports.

“I have accepted the District Court’s evaluation of the evidence, in as much as the use of whole or broken bottles during the assault has not been proven,” Suneson said.

He added that the Stockholm District Court “has dismissed the plea of self-defense, something that I believe was important to clarify in this particular case,” according to The Associated Press.{mosads}

The New York rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested in July after a street fight in the Swedish capital in which he reportedly played a role. A video of the incident began circulating on social media and appeared to show the 30-year-old musician slamming another person into the ground.

Suneson filed charges against A$AP Rocky and two members of his entourage “suspected of assault causing actual bodily harm, having come to the conclusion that the events in question constitute a crime and despite claims of self-defense and provocation.” Prosecutors were reportedly pushing for a six-month sentence.

A$AP Rocky pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer argued his client was acting in self-defense.

The case quickly gained attention in the U.S. after President Trump said he learned of it from first lady Melania Trump and discussed it with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West.

After almost a month in detention, A$AP Rocky and his entourage were released earlier this month and have since returned to the U.S., the AP reports.
