1 killed, others injured in New York City building collapse

At least one person was killed and five were injured after a building partially collapsed in New York City on Tuesday, according to authorities.

{mosads}The city’s fire department tweeted that it was responding to the partial collapse in the Bronx. It said that of the five people injured, two had serious injuries and three had non-life-threatening injuries.

It also said in a tweet that a trapped individual had been recovered but later died from their injuries.

John Esposito, FDNY chief of Special Operations, said at a news briefing Tuesday afternoon that the person who had been trapped and killed was an employee, who had been working on the second floor of the building.

He added that firefighters had to dig through rubble, broken concrete blocks and building material to locate the person after the collapse, which took place shortly before noon.

Abigail Kunitz, a spokeswoman in the city’s Department of Buildings, told The Hill in a statement that inspectors were on site and conducting an investigation.

NBC New York reported that it was unclear how many people were in the two-story building at the time.
