Walmart shooting ‘hero’ arrested just before meeting Trump: report

A man honored by President Trump for his actions during a mass shooting in El Paso was arrested by the Secret Service Monday for an outstanding warrant.

50-year-old Chris Grant of Texas was arrested Monday on an active arrest warrant, though information about what Grant is accused of was not immediately clear. A spokesperson for the Secret Service told the Washington Examiner that Grant was released after it was determined he would not be extradited for the charge.

{mosads}“On Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, a White House visitor with an arrest warrant was temporarily detained by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers. It was subsequently determined that while the arrest warrant was still active, the agency that issued the warrant would not extradite, at which time the individual was released from Secret Service custody,” the Secret Service said.

Grant’s mother attended a White House event Monday in his stead, according to the Examiner, and accepted a signed certificate during a ceremony honoring Grant and others.

Grant told news outlets including CNN after the deadly shooting last month that he threw bottles and other objects at the shooter before being struck by bullets himself, though police reportedly dispute his account of the events.

President Trump previously honored Grant at a ceremony last month following the shooting, praising Grant’s actions and telling an audience that Grant suffered “two serious gunshot wounds but he is recovering well.”

The shooting last month at a Walmart in El Paso left 22 dead at the hands of a suspect who police say expressed racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric in a manifesto online before the attack.
