Firefighter who died in 9/11 honored again after remains identified

A Long Island firefighter who died on 9/11 was commemorated for the second time late Tuesday night on the eve of the attack’s 18th anniversary. 

Friends and family joined together for a memorial service honoring firefighter Michael Haub in Franklin Square. The ceremony was held after the New York City medical examiner last week identified more of his remains recovered at ground zero, according to NBC New York.

{mosads}”Nearly 18 years to the day after terrorists took his life, Firefighter Haub will be remembered by his loved ones and fellow firefighters,” FDNY-Uniformed Firefighters Association President Gerard Fitzgerald said in a statement Tuesday. 

Haub, who was 34 years old when he was killed, was from Ladder Co. 4 in midtown Manhattan and had been a firefighter for just two years. He was married and left behind two young children, according to NBC.

His remains were first found in lobby debris from the south tower six months after the attack.

Haub’s family first held a wake in March 2002 that was attended by then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg and FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
