Students at a South Carolina high school are facing disciple after placing “whites only” and “colored only” signs above drinking fountains in what the school’s principal called a “prank.”
An image posted on Facebook Wednesday that subsequently went viral shows the signs above the fountains at West Ashley High School, according to The State newspaper.
{mosads}Ryan Cumback, the principal of the school in West Ashley, which is about 10 miles west of Charleston, sent a message to parents Wednesday notifying them of the display, calling them “extremely insensitive and hurtful.”
“I understand how upsetting the image posted on social media is,” Cumback said in the message, according to the news outlet. “That is why we acted swiftly in addressing the matter and why I am reaching out tonight.”
He added that the students, who were not identified, “admitted they were wrong” and would be facing discipline for their actions.
The Charleston Police Department told local news outlet WCIV that the students won’t face criminal charges and the incident is being handled by the school.
