San Francisco artist painting massive mural of teen climate activist Greta Thunberg
An artist in San Francisco is painting a massive mural of Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg in the heart of the California city.
Andres Iglesias, whose art is signed by the pseudonym Cobre, is set to finish the mural in Union Square by early next week, and others are hoping to have a dedication and unveiling ceremony to celebrate it, SFGate reports.
Iglesias told the news outlet that he’s donating his time to painting the mural, adding that he hopes it makes viewers and passers-by realize that “we have to take care of this world.”
“Climate change is real,” Cobre said. “This girl Greta is awesome and she knows what she’s doing.”{mosads}
Paul Scott, executive director of environmental nonprofit One Atmosphere, approached Iglesias about the mural and is supplying all the paint for the project, SFGate reports.
“[Thunberg] is a bright light in a dark time and we hope people will follow her lead and make some changes,” he said.
The 16-year-old activist first gained international attention after she organized and led weekly protests outside Sweden’s parliament last year. Her small protests have since grown and inspired millions across the globe to join in their own demonstrations.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters have since taken to the streets in cities around the world to demand action from world governments on climate change.
