Two freight cars fell into the Potomac River in West Virginia on Saturday after part of a train headed for Maryland derailed.

Seven empty cars on a train that was headed to Maryland from Harpers Ferry, W.V., including the two that fell in the river had derailed early Saturday morning, a CSX spokesperson told The Hill in a statement.

All of the cars were empty and there were no injuries, the spokesperson said.

Passenger service will not be impacted and the cause of the incident is being investigated

The Washington County, Md., Emergency Management said in a statement that a road was closed due to the incident.

“Washington County Emergency Management is closely monitoring the scene and reports no injuries, no spills, no hazardous materials and no immediate danger to the public,” the agency said.
