Police in Germany kill man who allegedly tried to attack them with knife

Police in the western German city of Gelsenkirchen shot and killed a 37-year-old Turkish man they said attacked them with a knife, according to the BBC.

Police officials said the man, whose name has not been released, struck a police car with an unidentified object and then attempted to attack officers who were standing by the vehicle while holding a knife behind his back, ignoring warnings to stop.

While investigators are still assessing possible terror links in the attack, the local prosecutor’s office said the man’s name appeared on a watch list of people with suspected links to extremist groups.

Germany on Friday adjusted its terror threat level amid concerns that the U.S. drone strike in Iraq that killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani might lead to retaliatory attacks, according to the BBC.

Germany’s Interior Ministry on Saturday confirmed that it has circulated guidance to police across its 16 states on additional security for American and Jewish facilities, according to The Associated Press.

The incident in Germany shortly followed a knife attack in Paris that killed one and injured two, which French prosecutors said is being treated as terror-related.
