Lincoln Chafee files to run for president as a Libertarian

Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who briefly sought the 2016 Democratic nomination for president, on Sunday filed to run for the White House under the banner of the Libertarian Party, according to CNN.

Chafee filed paperwork over the weekend with the Federal Election Commission for the Wyoming-based campaign, with a website linked to the filing touting the slogans “Lincoln Leads with TRUTH” and “Thirty Years, Zero Scandals.”

“Protect Our Freedoms. Tell The Truth. No More Wars. No More Reckless Spending,” the site reads.

Chafee initially served in public office as a Republican, appointed to fill his late father John Chafee’s Senate seat by Gov. Lincoln Almond (R) in 1999 and elected to serve a full term in 2000 before his 2006 defeat by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D).

After his Senate defeat, Chafee endorsed then-Sen. Barack Obama for president in 2008 and was elected governor of Rhode Island as an independent in 2010.

He formally switched his affiliation to the Democratic Party in 2013 and sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2016, but withdrew from the race before the primaries began.
