Iranian leaders agree to ‘limited recount’

Iran’s leadership is going to conduct a “limited recount” of the presidential election last week, the Associated Press is reporting. The recount effort would be targeted at specific polling where voter fraud is alleged by the supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi.

The announcement from the 12-member Guardian Council will likely be viewed as an indication that Monday’s demonstrations may be working.

The Guardian Council must certify the election results for them to be official.

The recount, however, falls short of Mousavi call for the election to be annuled. But, interestingly, the AP reports that a spokesman for the Guardian Council “did not rule out the possibility of canceling the results,” which the Council has to power to do.

The AP also reported that seven protesters were killed in Monday’s demonstration.
