Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson released from hospital: reports

Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, were released from a hospital in Australia on Tuesday after being diagnosed with the coronavirus, local media reported, according to The Associated Press.

The actors were diagnosed with the virus five days ago. They were in Australia because Hanks is portraying Elvis Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, in a biopic about the musician’s life directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film, which was scheduled for release in October 2021, has now suspended production, the news service noted. 

Wilson, who is also a singer and songwriter, had performed in Brisbane and Sydney while the couple was in Australia.

Hanks released a Mr. Rogers-inspired thank you message Sunday, sharing a photo of a stuffed kangaroo toy and toast with the Australian classic vegemite spread over it.

“Thanks to the Helpers,” Hanks wrote. “Let’s take care of ourselves and each other.”

Australian journalist Richard Wilkins said he tested positive for the virus on Sunday, after meeting Wilson at the Sydney Opera House earlier this month and again at Nine Network’s Sydney studio, the AP reported.

Two hosts who work at the network, David Campbell and Belinda Russell, interviewed Wilson on television March 9. They returned to work Tuesday after testing negative for the virus.

Wilkins’s son, Christian Wilkins, was also tested for the virus after spending the night of March 10 in his father’s home in Sydney. The 25-year-old is currently competing on the Australian version of the reality TV show “Dancing with the Stars.”
