The Wimbledon Championships set to take place this summer will be canceled, the vice president of the German Tennis Federation told Sky Sports Germany

Dirk Hordorff said that the “necessary decisions have already been made” and the championship will be canceled.

“There is no doubt about it,” Hordorff told Sky Sports Germany.

“This is necessary in the current situation. It is completely unrealistic to imagine that, with the travel restrictions that we currently have, an international tennis tournament where hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world would travel [can happen]. That is unthinkable,” he added.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said last week that it was continuing a “detailed evaluation of all scenarios” and its board would soon be holding an emergency meeting.

AELTC at the time did not rule out postponing or canceling the championships.

Other sporting events have been postponed or canceled in wake of the global coronavirus pandemic.

The International Olympic Committee officially announced Monday that the Summer Games in Tokyo will be postponed a year due to the pandemic, and will take place starting on July 23, 2021.
