Sanford says he won’t resign

Facing pressure from some in is state to step down following his admission of an extramarital affair, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) said Monday that he will not resign.

NBC’s Mark Potter, who has been following the story from South Carolina since last week, reports that Sanford told him in an interview this morning that he plans to serve out the final 18 months of his term.

Some polling last week has suggested many South Carolinians want Sanford to resign.

Sanford is in his second term as governor and, by state law, cannot seek a third term.
