Cincinnati Reds players kneel during national anthem

Several Cincinnati Reds players knelt during the national anthem on Tuesday night before the team’s exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers.

Joey Votto, Amir Garrett, Phillip Ervin and Alex Blandino all knelt during the song. Several other players, including Mike Moustakas, Cody Reed and Sal Romano, stood next to the kneeling players, putting their hands on their shoulders in support.

The Reds tweeted a picture of the scene, commenting “unity” followed by a heart emoji and “#BlackLivesMatter.”

The players kneeling came after several members of San Francisco Giants, including manager Gabe Kapler, knelt during the anthem before the team’s 6-2 exhibition win against the Oakland Athletics.

Major League Baseball kicks off its abbreviated 60-game season this week, becoming the latest American sports league to return to action amid the coronavirus pandemic.
