NHL announces no positive coronavirus tests for players in first week back

The National Hockey League (NHL) said Monday no players have tested positive for the coronavirus during its first week back. 

The league said that anyone who is part of a given team’s 52-member traveling party, including players, were tested on a daily basis between July 27 and Aug. 1. There were no positive COVID-19 results out of the 7,013 tests administered.

“The NHL will continue to provide regular updates on COVID-19 testing results. The League will not be providing information on the identity of any individuals or Clubs,” the NHL said in its statement.

Last week, the NBA also announced that it had had no positive test results during its first week of play at a controlled environment at the Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla., according to CNN. 

Other professional sports leagues in the U.S., however, have had outbreaks, including on multiple baseball teams. The Miami Marlins announced late last month that it would suspend its 2020 season after 17 players tested positive for the coronavirus, and a separate, smaller outbreak has also been reported among the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Philadelphia Eagles football team announced Sunday its head coach Doug Pederson tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-quarantining. The announcement followed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s decision last week to cancel preseason games as a cautionary move.
