Georgia officer to be fired after using racial slur to describe inmate on suicide watch

Clayton County Sheriff's Office

Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill placed a correctional officer on administrative leave without pay on Sunday after he allegedly used a racial slur to describe a Georgia inmate on suicide watch.

The Georgia sheriff’s office said in a Sunday statement that correctional officer Gregory Hubert Brown was placed on leave after “he called a inmate on suicide watch a ‘crazy N-word’ in front of other inmates and another Correctional Officer.”

The office said on Sunday that Brown would be fired within the next 72 hours due to the incident “in compliance with civil service guidelines.”

The incident marks the third time that Brown has been fired from a position in a correctional facility in the last 10 years, according to reports.

Brown in 2010 was fired from the Coweta County Prison for “workplace violence” after he threatened and pushed an officer in a “heated verbal and physical encounter,” NBC News reported.

After the officer asked Brown to fill in incomplete information on a form, Brown completed the request, but told the officer, “If you ever jump in my shit again, I will tear your f—ing head off of your shoulders.”

Brown appealed the termination, but it was upheld in 2011, according to NBC News.

The man was fired by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office as a jail officer in 2012 for “unsatisfactory performance during his probationary work period” after he locked sergeants inside cells with inmates on three separate occasions during cell checks, according to the outlet, in addition to other allegations.

The sheriff’s office rehired Brown in 2013.

The Hill has reached out to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office for additional information.
