Survey: More than half of Americans excited for vacations once pandemic is ‘under control’

The majority of Americans in a new survey are excited to go on vacation once the pandemic is “under control” after more than a year of coronavirus restrictions and pleas from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) not to travel.

The Morning Consult poll found that 62 percent of respondents are excited to go on vacation when the pandemic gets “under control,” although it is still unclear when that will be. 

States across the country are starting to loosen their coronavirus restrictions as millions are getting vaccinated, but health officials warn that caution is still needed and that herd immunity is a ways off.

A pandemic-record high of 49 percent of adults say they would be comfortable going on vacation right now, while comfort levels with renting cars and staying in hotels also rose to levels not seen in months.

Comfort with flying domestically is up to 32 percent, which comes as the Transportation Security Administration reports that recent weeks have seen the highest number of flyers since the pandemic began.

The CDC says that fully vaccinated people can travel safely, but should still engage in mask wearing and should get tested after international trips.

The Morning Consult poll is part of a weekly series that surveys around 2,200 adults and has a margin or error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
