Photoshopped deer in Kevlar vests circulate after Biden gun control comment

Social media users on Wednesday night tweeted photoshopped images of deer wearing Kevlar bulletproof vests after President Biden jokingly referred to the image when calling for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. 

Biden argued in a speech to a joint session of Congress that if you “talk to most responsible gun owners and hunters,” they will “tell you there’s no possible justification for having 100 rounds in a weapon.” 

The president then went off-script and added, “What do you think — deer are wearing Kevlar vests?” prompting laughter from lawmakers. 

The remark, which White House press secretary Jen Psaki later confirmed on Twitter was an ad-libbed line, prompted a series of memes and jokes on social media, with several users sharing edited images of deer in the woods and other grassy areas clad with bulletproof vests. 

“‘Deer in a kevlar vest’ is not something I thought I’d search today, but here you go,” one user wrote, before sharing one of the photoshopped images. 

Another user jokingly tweeted, “Jokes on you Joe this deer was wearing a Kevlar vest in my backyard just yesterday!” 

President Biden is right.

Biden in his address Wednesday went on to argue that “there are too many people today who are able to buy a gun but shouldn’t be able to buy a gun.” 

“These kinds of reasonable reforms have overwhelming support from the American people, including many gun owners,” he added. “The country supports reform … and Congress should act.” 

Biden reiterated his call for Congress to pass several gun reform bills, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as closing the loopholes on background checks for gun purchases. 

Two bills have already passed in the House that would strengthen background checks and end the so-called Charleston loophole by extending the time federal investigators have to conduct background checks. 

“This shouldn’t be a red or blue issue,” Biden argued Wednesday. “And no amendment to the Constitution is absolute. You can’t yell ‘Fire!’ in a crowded theater.”  

He went on to argue, “From the very beginning, there were certain guns, weapons, that could not be owned by Americans. Certain people could not own those weapons ever.” 

“We’re not changing the Constitution; we’re being reasonable,” Biden said. “I think this is not a Democrat or Republican issue; I think it’s an American issue.”
