ADL reports ’75 percent surge’ in antisemitic attacks in last two weeks

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) says it has seen a 75 percent surge in antisemitic attacks in the last two weeks as President Biden is facing calls to condemn antisemitism.

“Oftentimes in the past where there would be a conflagration in Middle East, there might be an uptick in anti-Semitism here,” CEO of ADL Jonathan Greenblatt told CBS News.

“But the last two weeks, it has been more drastic and frankly, more dangerous,” he added.

The 75 percent surge the past two weeks is up from 63 percent that the ADL reported May 24.

The rise in cases comes after violence broke out between Israel and Hamas earlier in the month.

Jewish Democrats have recently called for an ambassador to address antisemitism and condemned remarks by Republicans and Democrats on the situation.

Although Biden has condemned antisemitism, he is facing pressure to take more action against the recent rise in attacks.

The ADL found between May 7 and 14 that a variation of the words “Hitler was right” was tweeted 17,000 times.

“You can have strong opinions about what’s happening in China, but there’s no excuse to attack Asian Americans … and there is no excuse, no pretext, that permits assaulting and attacking Jews in this country,” Greenblatt said.

ADL is hosting a virtual rally on Thursday against antisemitism in light of the uptick in antisemitic attacks.
