Floyd’s brother asked judge for maximum sentence for Chauvin

George Floyd’s brother Terrence Floyd asked that former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin be given the maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, moments before the ex-cop received a 22 1/2-year sentence.

“On behalf of me and my family, we seek the maximum penalty. We don’t want to see no more slaps on the wrist. We’ve been through that already,” Terrence Floyd said as he gave his victim impact statement.

Prosecutors were seeking a 30-month sentence.

Addressing Chauvin, he asked him why he had decided to pin down his brother even after he was handcuffed.

“What was going through your head when you had your knee on my brother’s neck?” Floyd said, addressing Derek Chauvin. “Why — when you knew that he posed no threat anymore, he was handcuffed — why you didn’t at least get up?”

Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill later on Friday afternoon sentenced Chauvin to 270 months in prison.

In May 2020, Chauvin murdered Floyd after pinning his knee on Floyd’s neck. Footage of the incident circulated, prompting nationwide protests against police brutality and the treatment of African Americans in the U.S.
