Chicago police fatally shoot man during arrest
Chicago police officers fatally shot a man Friday morning while attempting to arrest him, saying officers opened fire after the man pointed a gun at them.
Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent David Brown said during a news conference that a group of law enforcement officers was attempting to arrest a man wanted on two warrants at around 9:40 a.m. Friday.
The offender was identified inside his vehicle, but when officers approached, he wouldn’t leave his vehicle and allegedly refused to follow their instruction.
Brown said the offender then produced a firearm and pointed it at officers. Three CPD officers and one U.S. marshal fired their weapons, striking the man.
The man was transported to the hospital in “grave condition,” Brown said. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, CPD confirmed to The Hill.
None of the officers were hit by gunfire, Brown said, though they were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The Chicago police officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, Brown said.
The city’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability separately confirmed that officers activated their body cameras during the incident. The office is currently conducting an investigation into the incident and said it will release video in 60 days.
The man was wanted for aggravated sexual assault with a firearm as well as escaping electronic monitoring for cutting off his device, Brown said.
