Surfside mayor gives tenants 45 days to vacate his building for repairs

The mayor of Surfside, Fla. — the site of a deadly condominium building collapse in June — is giving tenants 45 days to vacate a building he owns for repairs.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett released a letter late Thursday night that he sent to the residents of The Lois Apartments, according to WPLG local10.com.

In the letter, Burkett said he’s been waiting for Miami Beach to allow them to repair damage caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017, according to The Associated Press.

He also said the building will undergo the required 40-year inspection early due to the collapse of the Chaplain Towers South condominium that caused the deaths of close to 100 people.

“We regret that this work will create potentially dangerous conditions for residents,” Burkett wrote according to AP.

Tenants will have to leave by Oct. 24, but can return when renovations are completed, Burkett said, according to AP. Tenants who paid their rent and who have not damaged their unit will have their security deposits refunded.

The Hill has reached out to Burkett’s company for comment.

The property is one of eleven that his company Burkett Companies owns in Florida, most of which are in Miami Beach.
