Biomedical engineering student at Texas A&M dies of COVID-19

A biomedical engineering student at Texas A&M University died of COVID-19 last week.

Kirstyn Katherine Ahuero died of complications from COVID-19 on Sept. 8, according to an obituary posted on the website of Kerryville Funeral Home.

News of Ahuero’s death was first reported by The Eagle.

Ahuero, 20, was a sophomore at Texas A&M University-College Station studying biomedical science, according to the obituary.

However, the funeral home article said she found her “true calling” volunteering for the National Suicide Hotline and decided to become a psychiatric nurse.

“Kirstyn had a passion for helping others in need and found her home away from home in her church group on campus,” the obituary read. “She loved spending time with her animals, taking trips with family, and gaming with her family and friends.”

In a statement to The Eagle, Texas A&M said the university was mourning her death.

“Her desire to become a psychiatric nurse was a true calling to serve those in greatest need,” the university told the newspaper.

The Hill has reached out to Texas A&M for comment.

In lieu of flowers, Ahuero’s family asked for donations to Mission 22, an organization dedicated to preventing veteran suicide.

Texas A&M has over 64,000 students and 10,160 faculty and staff in the Bryan-College Station area.

According to the school’s COVID-19 dashboard, there were 1,528 active cases on campus as of Sept. 8.
