Washington Football Team announces ‘Commanders’ as new team name
The NFL team formerly known as Washington Football Team unveiled its new name on Tuesday with much fanfare.
In a video posted to Twitter, the team announced that it will now go by the “Washington Commanders.”
The highly anticipated rebrand of the team name comes after it faced backlash against its longstanding “Redskins” nickname, which critics said was racist.
For the past two years, the team has simply gone by “Washington Football Team.”
In the Tuesday post to Twitter, the team donned new uniforms sporting a new “W” logo with the caption “One legacy. One unified future. We are the Washington Commanders.”
The team also shared a custom hashtag declaring its new rallying cry.
“Welcome to our new chapter #TakeCommand,” the team’s Twitter bio now reads.
