Specter, Sestak snipe at each other as Pa. Dem primary looms

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) took aim at each other this morning, appearing in separate interviews on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

In a sign of how bitter the primary has become, Sestak refused to say that he’d endorse Specter if the incumbent prevails in Tuesday’s primary.

{mosads}”What I know is this, that, in a war, you always know you’re going to succeed. And so I’m going to win and I’m looking forward to Senator Specter’s support after the eighteenth of May,” he said when asked about a possible endorsement.

Specter, for his part, said he’d be happy to endorse Sestak, and took a swipe at the Congressman for dodging the question.

“Sure. I am going to support anybody against Pat Toomey,” Specter said, adding that Sestak’s non-answer was an example of how he “ducks and bobs and weaves” when asked tough questions.

Sestak said he would be best able to ride the anti-incumbent wave in 2010, comparing the campaign to Scott Brown’s stunning upset in Massachusetts.

“I really do think that Massachusetts said it very clearly for everyone: pox on both your houses down there. We voted for change, not just in policy, but politics,” he said.

Significantly, Sestak refused to characterize the election as a referendum on President Obama, who has endorsed Specter.

“This is absolutely not about President Obama,” Sestak said.
