Steele: Sen. Bayh ‘sold out’ his constituents

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele didn’t have many kind words for Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) in response to his retirement.

Steele said Bayh was “running for the hills” beacuse he, along with other centrist Democrats, had “sold out their constituents.”

“Sen. Bayh announced today he won’t seek reelection, claiming to be disenchanted with the political process,” Steele said in a statement. “After Democrats spent billions of taxpayer dollars on a failed stimulus and voted to spend billions more for their unpopular government-run healthcare plan, I think it’s fair to say that Americans are disenchanted as well.”

He continued: “The timing isn’t a coincidence either. The fact of the matter is Sen. Evan Bayh and moderate Democrats across the country are running for the hills because they sold out their constituents and don’t want to face them at the ballot box.”

Steele’s statement stands in stark contrast to the kinder words offered by Indiana Republican Party Chairman Murray Clark.
