Klein, Wasserman Schultz choose Meek

The first members of Florida’s congressional delegation have weighed in on a possible Democratic Senate primary between Reps. Kendrick Meek and Corrine Brown, with Reps. Ron Klein and Debbie Wasserman Schultz backing Meek.

“I am proud to support Kendrick Meek for U.S. Senate,” said Klein, who had considered his own Senate bid. “His hard work helped Democrats take back the majority in Congress in 2006. As a U.S. Senator, Kendrick will fight for our entire state and help pass critical legislation like the Homeowners’ Defense Act. He has my full support, and I look forward to seeing Kendrick working on the other side of the Capitol Rotunda soon.”

Wasserman Schultz said: “Kendrick can outwork anyone and I witnessed his dedication firsthand in 2002 when he led the effort to reduce class size in Florida. Kendrick stands up when others sit down and that is the type of leader Florida needs in the U.S. Senate.”

Look for Meek to continue to get big-name support, with Brown’s exploratory committee basically coming out of left field. Miami Mayor Manny Diaz backed Meek in recent days, and many key unions are already on board.

The winner of the Democratic primary will face the winner of a GOP primary featuring Gov. Charlie Crist and former state House Speaker Marco Rubio.
