The Yepsen era ends

Today is Iowa political guru David Yepsen’s last day at the Des Moines Register.

I have always been a huge fan of Yepsen’s, so here’s a video of an interview he recently gave looking back on his time at the Register. It is well worth watching.

Yepsen talks about how presidential campaigns and the Iowa caucuses have changed in the more than three decades he has covered them. He recalls being the only reporter to cover one of former President Jimmy Carter’s first press conferences in the state and tells the story of going for late night pizza with Joe Biden during his 1988 presidential run. He also discusses what he sees as the biggest problems with modern presidential campaigns.
