Mich. SoS Will Seek GOP Nomination for Governor

Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land will run for governor in 2010, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Land will file paperwork to lay groundwork for her run today, the paper reported, and will speak at a state meeting of Republicans this weekend.

Land joins a growing field of Republicans hoping to pick up the Michigan governorship, where two-term Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) is prohibited from running again.

Republican Attorney General Mike Cox and state Sen. Tom George (R) have both announced their candidacies, and Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) is also a rumored candidate. The primary is likely to see candidates benefit from strong allegiances to figures traditionally in charge of the state’s party, making for a potentially nasty race, as well.

A win, though, by Republicans might be seen as a step back toward power after years of having struggled in high-profile, statewide elections.

Lt. Gov. John Cherry is the only Democrat to have announced in the race for governor.
