Deeds touts winning straw poll ‘in Terry’s backyard’

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds took a gentle jab at Democratic primary rival Terry McAuliffe in a fundraising email Thursday, noting that Deeds recently won a straw poll “right in Terry McAuliffe’s backyard.”

The email says Deeds won the 10th Congressional District straw poll last weekend. It was a sliver of good news for the Deed’s camp as polling indicates he and former Virginia Delegate Brian Moran have fallen behind McAuliffe in the Democratic primary field.

“Last weekend, Creigh pulled off a major upset by winning the 10th Congressional District straw poll, receiving more votes than his two opponents combined,” the email from Deed’s campaign manager says. “This was a major win in the all-important outer suburbs of Northern Virginia, stretching from Winchester through Loudoun to McLean – right in Terry McAuliffe’s own backyard.”

The email directs readers to an online contribution website.

Moran, Deeds and McAuliffe will square off in the June 9 Democratic primary. The winner will face former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell.
