Cuomo Edges Kennedy in Latest NY Poll

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo may be inching ahead of Caroline Kennedy as New York Democrats’ top choice to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) in the Senate.

A Siena College survey found that 30 percent of New York Democrats would like to see New York Gov. David Paterson (D) to appoint Cuomo, while 28 percent backed Kennedy, who has only recently made her interest in the position official.

Competing polls last week showed Cuomo and Kennedy tied, while another showed Kennedy with a larger lead.

Paterson will have to appoint a successor to Clinton, pending her confirmation as Secretary of State in the Obama administration. The Democrat who is appointed would have to run statewide in 2010.
