Dole Ad Ties Hagan to ‘Godless Americans’

Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) has a new hard-hitting ad that tries to tie her opponent, Democrat Kay Hagan, to an atheist group.

In the ad, a narrator talks about the “secret fundraiser” that the Godless Americans PAC “held in [Hagan’s] honor.” The ad shows Hagan standing just beyond partially open door at the event before showing footage of Godless Americans on cable news.

Hagan dismissed any suggestions that she shares the views of the atheist group. Hagan, a practicing Christian, said that Dole should be “ashamed of herself.”

Dole is currently trailing Hagan 42 percent to 47 percent according to Pollster.com’s trend line of polls of the race.

This isn’t the first ad that the Dole campaign or Republicans have put out about the Godless Americans event. The Dole campaign sent out a mailer, which The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., found to incorrectly suggest that Hagan holds the views of the group. The National Republican Senatorial Committee also released a Web ad two weeks ago focusing on the fundraiser.
