Meghan McCain Says She Voted For Gore in 2000, When She Was Too Young to Vote

Meghan McCain said Tuesday that she voted for Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race. But McCain, who was born in 1984, was too young to vote in that race.

McCain said on Fox News that she cast ballots for Gore in 2000 and Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 because of ill will toward President Bush, who defeated her father, John McCain, for the 2000 GOP presidential nomination. McCain dropped out that year after losing the South Carolina primary. His allies have the loss on rumors that he had a fathered a child out of wedlock and that his wife was a drug addict.

“I just couldn’t get behind President Bush,” Meghan McCain said Tuesday. “I just couldn’t. It’s personal.”She told Fox News host Alan Colmes that she voted for both Gore and Kerry when he asked her how she came to support her father in this year’s election.

The McCain campaign hasn’t responded to a question about her 2000 vote.

Here’s the part of her Fox interview during which she talks about voting for Gore and Kerry:

COLMES: Is it true you voted for Kerry last time?

MCCAIN: I did, I voted for Kerry and Al Gore, yes.

COLMES: What happened? Oh your father ran, that’s what happened, right?

MCCAIN: You know — you mean what happened now?

COLMES: Well, I mean there was a transition for you in terms of what your.

MCCAIN: I can be behind my father all day every day…

COLMES: Sure.

MCCAIN: … until the end of time. I just couldn’t get behind President Bush. I just couldn’t. It’s personal.
