GOP Gains in Generic Congressional Matchups

The gap between Republicans and Democrats in generic congressional matchups has narrowed, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research poll.

A majority of voters, 52 percent, said they preferred a Democrat in next month’s races, while 47 percent of said they favored a Republican. A similar poll released two weeks ago showed Democrats with a 56-42 advantage over GOP candidates.

More than three quarters of those surveyed disapproved of Congress as a whole, with both parties getting low marks individually.

“If the current generic ballot numbers hold on Election Night, congressional Republicans may not fare nearly as poorly as many observers expected a few months ago,” said CNN’s Alan Silverleib.
